A smart meter doesn’t cut your bill by itself. What it does is read your usage automatically and unlock time-of-use tariffs. Here’s what ESB Networks says about cost, installation and what actually changes.
Is a smart meter free?
Yes. ESB Networks states that “there is no additional charge for upgrading your meter”. The cost is already included in the network charges you pay on your bill, so you won’t get a separate invoice for the swap.
How you get one
Upgrades are rolling out in stages, and ESB Networks contacts customers in advance about their area and exchange date. If you haven’t heard from them, you can request one using the Smart Meter Sign Up Form on the ESB Networks site.
If you already have a Day/Night meter, the rollout also covers a like-for-like exchange for a smart version, and you keep your current Day/Night price plan.
What happens on install day
A technician or contractor replaces your meter in the same location. To do the work safely, your electricity supply has to be off for approximately 45 minutes. If your meter is indoors, an appointment is arranged in advance.
The three time bands
A smart meter supports tariffs with three periods:
| Band | Hours |
|---|---|
| Day | 8am to 11pm (excluding peak) |
| Peak | 5pm to 7pm |
| Night | 11pm to 8am |
Your supplier sets the rates for each band, not ESB Networks. Whether a time-of-use plan saves you money depends on how much of your usage you can move to the night band — see whether a night rate is worth it before you switch.
Will your tariff change?
No. Your tariff doesn’t change just because the meter is installed. Any move to a time-of-use plan is a separate decision agreed with your supplier. That means you can take the meter first and compare plans afterwards, using our guide to switching supplier.
Fewer estimated bills
Because the meter sends readings automatically, your bills should rely less on estimates. They can still happen — for example during connection gaps, in low-connectivity areas, or in the first 30 days after installation, while the meter connects to the secure network.
See your usage online
Through your ESB Networks Online Account you can view and download a breakdown of your electricity use, with daily, weekly and monthly figures. Microgeneration customers can also see exported electricity. Pair that with the seven-day appliance energy audit to find out what is really driving your bill.
Can you refuse one?
ESB Networks says the Government and the CRU require old mechanical meters to be replaced, and doesn’t offer a simple opt-out. If you have concerns, you can contact ESB Networks; if you’re unhappy with the response, a complaint is logged and you’re given the CRU’s contact details.
