An attractive quote can hide a lot of assumptions. Self-use matters because electricity you use avoids an import price, while exported units usually earn less.

Building Energy Rating

Where does your home sit on the BER scale?

A and B are very good; C is decent; D is common in older homes; E–G are poor. Since 24 May 2026 new certificates use a simplified A0–G scale; older certificates like the bands below stay valid for 10 years. Hover or tap a band.

Bands on certificates issued before 24 May 2026, in kWh per m² per year. Newer certificates use the simplified A0–G scale.

B2

Energy use

101–125 kWh/m²/yr

B on the new scale

Efficient. The target for most upgrades; comfortable and cheap to run.

The letter reflects the building — insulation, heating, windows and ventilation — not how you live in it.

The SEAI process

How SEAI grants work, in three steps.

  1. 1

    Check your eligibility

Most grants require your home to have been built and occupied before a set year, and a valid BER assessment.

  2. 2

    Apply before you start

You apply to SEAI and get approval first. Starting works before approval usually means you lose the grant.

  3. 3

Get the work done & claim

Use a registered contractor, complete a post-works BER where required, and SEAI pays the grant.
